I spent Yesterday morning searching for a better internet access option. It was a bit of wishful thinking from the start really because I've just locked us into a 24 month contract. But its strong wishing because we have slow broadband and even in safe mode its keeps dropping out. We are 2.3 km from the exchange along degraded old copper infrastructure.
I began by looking for the fatest connections available. Currently the fastest connections available are via cable. I lookup this site and found a couple of fast cable connections
I figured that since I was wishing, there was no point wishing in small lumps... go for the biggest.
I went to the providers site to have a closer look
And check out availability of the service for our address. And of course... its not availble. If you live in select spots in Melbourne or Sydney the full speed of 30 Mbps is available to you. In other places its available at 17 Mbps. But little old Carlisle is not on the list.
So I'm stuck with a slow (<8 Mbps) unstable broadband service for the forseeable future. Well... anyway, like I said, I've locked us into a contract with our current provider anyway.
By the way... if I am coming across as the grumpy old man... its probably because we have had hot humid weather for what seems like forever... and i have had enough. No wonder folks in the tropics go crazy leading up to the wet. It is so oppressive!

It is relative. and I remember when 14 Kbps was the latest and greatest. I had to upgrade my modem to cope with it. And then along came 56 Kbps... that was amazing!
I sit next to a guy at work who lives near an exchange and gets 24 MBps regulalry and my brother in law gets 18 Mbps becasue he lives only 0.7 km from the exchnage.
Actually I am very happy with my 8 Mbps... Its fast enough. I can live with it... for now :)

Hi Russel
Having lived with dial up until last July sounds like a super-sonic jet to me.
Good luck, Allison
